What is Manipulation with Anesthesia?
Under anesthesia, Term Manipulation is just as it sounds. It involves manipulating your muscles under anesthesia. This has been practiced by osteopathic physician since the 1930s.
Manipulation Under Anesthesia or (MUA) can be performed while the patient is under light anesthesia to induce relaxation. Adjustments are made and stretching moves are performed that would normally cause pain if the patient were awake.
This is an outpatient procedure that includes post-procedure therapy and exercise AmbulatoryAnaesthesia.
MUA can be very useful for people who have chronic back, neck and joint problems.
Here is a list that shows MUA can be effective.
• Chronic myofascitis
• Torticollis
• Chronic re-injury
• Fibro adhesion buildup
• chronic disc problems
These are just a few. A few chiropractic patients who have reached a plateau with traditional therapy might also notice a significant improvement in their quality of living.
MUA works as the patient is in a "Twilight," which allows the patient be responsive but also not anxious. MUA will provide the same chiropractic adjustments, but the patient will experience less force.
The chiropractor will then perform stretching exercises as well as manipulating movements. The patient is then placed into recovery for 15 to 20 minute. The chiropractor will stay until the patient leaves and is allowed to go home. For the next several weeks, the patient must continue to exercise with the chiropractor and keep up the exercise program.
The patient should undergo intensive therapy for 7-10 day after their last MUA procedure. This should include the same exercises as during the MUA.
Procedure and adjustments made in the doctor’s chair. After this, you will be treated with rehabilitation. These include stretching, flexibility and strengthening exercises. You may also need to make periodic adjustments as necessary by your doctor. A program of post MUA therapy will help the patient recover pre-injury muscle strength and prevent future disability.
