Dealing With Pain After Hysterectomy
Post-operative pain is common for all surgical patients. Although this is a concern
for many, it can be alleviated by knowing that there are options. These methods are meant to reduce the discomfort of
hysterectomy pain, but not completely eliminate it.
A Management Plan to Deal With the Pain
It is a good idea to discuss the pain management after hysterectomy with your doctor. It is important to discuss with your doctor how they plan to manage the pain you will experience following the surgery. Also, what they will do if it doesn't go according to plan. Ask your doctor about the Group Anesthesia Company options available to you for managing your pain. You should also discuss when the medication can be started, what medication you will take at home, and what to do if your medication runs out.
Pain Management After Surgery
Here are some ways to deal with the pain after
hysterectomy.
On-Q. On-Q is a pain management method that administers local
anesthesia to the surgical area through a small tube that is inserted through
your incision.
Morphine pump. This pump is attached to the IV of the patient. By pressing a button, the patient can receive a controlled
dose of morphine when she needs it.
Post-op epidural. The patient is given a catheter through which low-dose pain
medication is administered to localized anesthesia. The patient can now ambulate without the need for oral pain
medication and will require less.
These pain management systems can be given to patients
for up to two days following surgery.
Pain Management at Home
Oral medication is used for pain management at home. Narcotic pain medication
should be taken approximately every four to six hours. It can also be
supplemented by anti-inflammatory drugs every eight hours.
Addiction and Pain Medication Refill
Patients rarely need to be given another dose of
medication. The pain usually subsides within a month. The controlled and short
duration of the medication means that there is no chance of becoming addicted. These medicines are not used for the sensations, but to
relieve pain. This helps prevent addiction.
